Welcome back to another Modern Rock Tracks Review. Let’s get started.
Snow (Hey Oh)-Red Hot Chili Peppers: Snow (Hey Oh) is another one of my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. I really like the more mellow music with the gentle guitar riffs and the lyrics about starting fresh, especially off recovering from substance abuse, are very relatable for a lot of people. I give this song a perfect 5/5.
Pain-Three Days Grace: This song is fine. It’s about a feeling of numbness and while the music sounds good, it’s not something I would go back to that much. I give it a 3/5.
From Yesterday-30 Seconds To Mars: 30 Seconds To Mars is a band spearheaded by Jared Leto and his brother Shannon that’s pretty much a prog-rock vanity project for the former. I never got into the hype of this band as I found their music to be background noise of shallow pretension. So it won’t come to any surprise that I don’t like From Yesterday. The music is fine, but I don’t like Jared Leto’s singing and screeching that often clashes with the music to become noise. The writing is also lackluster as it has nothing to say. I’m giving this song a 2/5. It was saved from a 1 by the music.
Survivalism-Nine Inch Nails: This is a solid song, though not one of my favorites from Nine Inch Nails. It’s getting a 3.5/5 from me.
What I’ve Done-Linkin Park: Because of how bad the sequels were, it’s easy to forget how much of a big deal 2007’s Transformers was. Seeing giant alien robots fight in live-action was pretty cool, even with the subpar writing and characterization. One of the best things to come out of these films was Linkin Park’s contributions to the soundtrack, starting with What I’ve Done. The cold piano riff that serves as an intro before the rocking instrumentation kicks in. The writing is based on regretting all the bad things someone has done and trying to be better. This song was part of the reason I enjoyed the 2007 Transformers movie and I’m giving it a perfect 5/5.
Icky Thump-The White Stripes: Now here’s the other song that The White Stripes are known for outside of Seven Nation Army. Icky Thump kicks all sorts of ass. Jack White’s phenomenal guitar work and Meg White on the drums make for a raw garage rock staple. The song is very critical of the way the United States has handled immigration. Hell, it even calls out some white Americans for their hypocrisy on this issue since the Natives were here first. How apt this song is for modern day politics. Anyways, I’m giving this song a 5/5.
Paralyzer-Finger Eleven: Next up is Paralyzer by Finger Eleven. It’s a sleazy song where a dude is infatuated with a certain woman, but the music has this funk-rock groove that’s just infectious. It’s in my 100 Best Songs of the 2000s list for a reason, it’s just a fun song to listen to. I’m giving it a 5/5.
The Pretender-Foo Fighters: The last song we’re gonna talk about comes from the Foo Fighters. The Pretender is a pretty good song. It rocks and stomps, and Dave Grohl sounds great. It’s another solid addition to the Foo Fighters catalog. I’m giving it a 4/5.
