Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 Review: November 2017

Welcome back to another Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 Review where we talk about the 40 most popular songs in the US. It’s the fourth anniversary of this blog on WordPress and the fourth year of these Top 40 Reviews. A lot has changed over the years and many more will come, but one thing will never change and that’s me giving you something that’s worth reading. Let’s get started.

#36. What Ifs-Kane Brown ft Laura Alaina: D

#35. Wolves-Selena Gomez & Marshmello: Seems like Selena Gomez is struggling these days. Her most successful single this year was a collaboration with Kygo and none of her other singles have lasting power. Will Wolves break that cycle or keep it going? Who knows? Still, this is a decent song despite it being a lesser version of It Ain’t Me. Marshmello provides us trap production rooted on a guitar riff and Selena is working within her limited range as she tries to reconnect with someone. It’s not the best thing both artists have made, but this is a good enough song. I give it a B.

#27. Bad At Love-Halsey: You know? For a good amount of time, I forgot about Halsey. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere, I don’t know what it is. Anywho, Bad At Love. Her newest single from her latest album that you’ve all forgotten about by now and this song shows why. The production features dull trap drums paired with a flat synth line. Vocally, Halsey still sounds atrocious. She lists off past lovers, both male and female, in an attempt to show that she’s bad at love and she’s not convincing. Her reasonings for these breakups are flimsy at best and they don’t paint her in a positive light. I don’t really like this song and I’m giving it an F.

#26. New Rules-Dua Lipa: About time this song showed up. New Rules is already a huge hit globally, yet the US is months behind once again because we’re stupid like that. Still, New Rules is awesome. It takes the tropical sound that was huge last year and cranks up the groove to give it more bounce and flavor, especially on the chorus. Dua Lipa is a very expressive singer who can pull off the emotional weight of the writing, where she’s setting rules for herself to not associate herself with her ex because it could lead back to them getting back together. Great pop song. I’m going to give it an A.

#24. No Limit-G-Eazy ft A$AP Rocky & Cardi B: You all remember G-Eazy, right? He’s basically another boring white rapper with nothing unique to offer, so for his latest single No Limit, he brought in two rappers who are more interesting than him to mixed results. A$AP Rocky rides this beat like a boat in the ocean, which also knocks. This makes me question why he’s only doing the hook because G-Eazy is a nonpresence. Seriously. A$AP would kill this song. Some people liked Cardi B’s verse and said she was the best thing about it. I thought it was okay. I’ll give her this: she has punchlines. I honestly can’t hate this song because there is some enjoyable elements in it. I just wish it was better. I give it a C.

#14. Motorsport-Migos ft Nicki Minaj & Cardi B: Well, Migos are about to release a new album soon because we don’t have enough of them on the charts. This time, they teamed up with the two most popular female rappers today for Motorsport. What we were given is a summation of every single modern rap song in a nutshell. A trap beat with bells as its melody along with muted synths, all of the luxury porn to make Diddy blush, drug intake that can kill a whale, a dickton of Auto-Tune from Quavo, and Nicki Minaj being Nicki Minaj. None of the verses were that great, the best one is from Cardi B, who ends her verse with a Gasolina reference because why not. Aside from that, I got nothing out of this song; it’s an hollow shell and it’s getting an F from me.

#7. Gucci Gang-Lil Pump: Soundcloud rap is now official. Thanks to the influence of streaming, we’re bound to see more of these guys on the charts. Lil Pump, just like XXX, is one of those names I’ve seen around the net, but never bothered checking out. Now he’s in the Top 10, so I can’t escape him. So how is Gucci Gang? Well, it’s exactly what I expected out of these type of rappers; a broken trap beat, a repetitive hook, and only one verse. There’s so many questionable lines like getting high with his grandmother, having sex with his teacher, selling meth, and cursing out WestJet because they kicked him off a flight for being an obnoxious douchehole. This guy’s rapping sound so much like a bargain-bin Mac Miller. At least the song is short at two minutes. If all Soundcloud rappers had only 1 or 2 minute long songs, it makes listening through them a breeze. As for Gucci Gang, it’s bad in an unlikable manner and I’m giving it an F.
